Educator, California's first Superintendent of Schools. Sailed around Horn to California (1852-1853). Letters describe experiences of voyage and first impressions of San Francisco. Singled out for special mention are Chinese, prostitutes, scenery and schools. George C. Mack was a California educator. He was licensed to teach at Fairfield (1864) and correspondence from C.W. Childs, Superintendent of Schools in Solano County, indicates that he was still there in 1874, although two letters from California's first State Superintendent, John Swett, indicate that he was offered positions in Visalia and Napa (1865-66).
